Our collection of mochilas and clutches are handmade in the desert of La Guajira, in Northern Colombia by artisans of the Wayuu indigenous group. The Wayuu are the largest indigenous group of Colombia. Despite Europeans’ many attempts to colonise them, the Wayuu have been able to preserve their culture, language and weaving traditions. Traditionally Wayuu women are taught to crochet during the “encierro” a sacred confinement which begins during their first menstruation and can last from months to years. During this rite of passage into womanhood, a girl learns to care for the home, for her family and crochet.

Our mochilas and clutches are sourced in partnership with a social enterprise that collaborates directly with artisans from the Wayuu community. By purchasing this product you are helping to preserve traditional knowledge and empowering local women artisans.
